More ANA Auction Results with Rarities Night

Rarities Night was once again a success as Stack's Bowers Galleries has completed most of their August Global Showcase Auction which began at the Pittsburg ANA and is still ongoing at their Costa Mesa offices. Even though the number of competitive buyers has been somewhat reduced (likely temporarily), most of the results were within 10%-15% of our listed values. There were some exceptions where bidders were able to find bargains at slightly larger discounts, but the market still appears to be very active. For those using a wait-and-see approach, they may have missed opportunities to acquire some want list items, and may not get a second chance on many of these rarities.
Top billing at Rarities Night goes to the 1870 CC $10 Gold certified by PCGS as AU58 and with the CAC approval. This coin is the highest certified for the date and it sold for a final price of $1,080,000. Highlighted below are two Capped Bust $5 Gold coins that showed well at Rarities Night and the chart includes other highlights from the Stack's Bowers Galleries ANA sale.
1815 $5 Gold Capped Bust certified by PCGS MS64
The 1815 $5 Gold is extremely rare with less than 15 coins known, and even more so in Mint State with just four listed. The highest certified is a PCGS MS65 which last sold in 2016 for $822,500. This 1815 $5 Gold in PCGS MS64 realized $720,000. This is also a pedigree coin from the Garrett collection and it previously sold as an NGC MS64 in 2009 for $460,000.

1830 $5 Gold Capped Bust certified by PCGS MS66 and CAC
While the 1830 $5 Gold had a rather high original mintage of over 125,000 coins, current data indicates that there are just 40-50 coins known. There are less than 30 coins total certified in all Mint State grades of the various varieties of the 1830 $5 Gold. This MS66 with the Large D is the finest known of the variety and carries the CAC approval, and it captured a very nice final bid of $420,000 in this sale.
