Whitman Baltimore Last Major Show of the Year

We are a few weeks away from the last big show of the year, and then dealers can begin their preparations for 2024. The Whitman Baltimore Expo is scheduled for early November and the official auction is being held by Stack's Bowers Galleries with lot viewing at the show and the sale the following week. Rarities Night has a nice selection of rare Gold coins that typically can be very difficult to acquire. With the metals showing some strength, potential buyers should be looking to get back into the market, especially if Gold continues to climb. Below are some of the projected highlights from the Stack's Bowers Rarities Night Sale, including some with the new CMQ label.
CMQ stands for Collectible Market Qualified, recently introduced by Stack's Bowers Galleries. This is a new service that identifies the highest quality graded coins in the market. Coins will be qualified by two of the best-known dealers in the country, David Hall and Greg Roberts. With their unanimous agreement, coins that meet the "rigorous standards of CMQ" will be granted a tamper-resistant hologram sticker, symbolizing the CMQ mark of approval, instilling confidence in a coin's quality and facilitating sight-unseen trading. The Stack's Bowers November Auction will be the first time that CMQ labeled coins will be featured and sold.
1853 O Seated Half Dollar No Arrows certified by PCGS Fine12
The 1853 O Seated Half Dollar with No Arrows does not have a listed mintage as none were originally reported. However, there is some speculation that as many as 3,000-4,000 may have been struck. Current reports show only four known coins with one graded by PCGS as VF35 which sold for $517,000 in a Stack's Bowers sale back in 2017. The Fair Market Value for the 1853 O graded Fine12 is $406,250.

1925 D $20 Gold St Gaudens certified by PCGS MS65 and CMQ
Although the 1925 D St Gaudens had a relatively high original mintage, it is quite likely that the majority did not get released into circulation. Most remained at the Treasury and eventually melted in the 1930's. The population reports indicate there are around 700 coins in all grades certified but it is quite likely that many are resubmissions; the actual number of coins in the market is substantially less. The highest grade certified is MS66 with three coins listed and just 15 coins certified in the MS65 grade. This coin should receive some premium bids, especially with the new CMQ label. Our FMV is currently listed at $124,150.
