NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

PCGS and Legend Combine for Last Event of the Year

December 11, 2023

Keep an eye on the metals as they have been quite volatile over the last few weeks. Gold broke its all-time high recently, over $2,100, only to fall back under the $2,000 mark in morning trading today. Premiums have been reduced on all products as demand has fallen off while buyers continue to wait out the current soft market. Dealers are expecting that the New Year will bring a change in attitude.
PCGS held their final Members Only Show of the year in Las Vegas last week. This is an event where PCGS dealers can have coins certified on-site as well as trade among other dealers, and Legend Rare Coin Auctions hosted their Regency Auction 62. This sale may not have had all the fanfare and the top rarities, but the bidding activity showed that there are still plenty of buyers willing to pay top dollar for the highest quality coins of a specific date. High quality and superb eye-appeal still attracts extremely competitive bidding.
Noteworthy in this sale was the number of rare date DMPL Carson City Morgan Dollars. Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgans have been popular with collectors for many decades. The size of the coin and the depth of the mirrors can be entrancing to the eye, but the bag marks tend to be more revealing as the mirror depth increases. In the higher grades, the bag marks are fewer and eye-appeal is enhanced. Below are a few examples of the DMPL Morgan Dollars sold in this sale and be sure to check out the prices realized for all the Carson City Dollars as well as the rest of Regency Auction 62 at the Legend website.
1892 CC Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS65 DMPL

This 1892 CC Morgan Dollar in Deep Mirror Prooflike is one of the finest known for the date with only one finer at PCGS MS65+. This PCGS MS65 sold for $85,187.50 in this sale which is the highest auction price for the date and grade. It is deeply toned but contrasts extremely well and the frost on Miss Liberty is dramatic in comparison to the field. The current FMV for this grade is $43,560 so it will be updated appropriately.

1893 CC Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS64 DMPL

The 1893 CC is more rare than the 1892 CC with about half as many originally minted; in DMPL, there are far fewer 1893 CC Morgans than the 1892 CC. This MS64 DMPL is the highest certified by PCGS although there is one coin certified by NGC as MS65 which sold in a 2007 Goldberg Sale for $83,375. This PCGS MS64 DMPL just sold for $79,312.50; the current FMV for this grade is $53,440 and will be updated as well.
