NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Market Active at Lower Price Levels

January 22, 2024

While there appears to be plenty of money available in the coin market for the right coins, buyers are still being very selective, much like 2023 ended. The number of buyers looking for specific coins based on their rarity has dwindled over the last year thus causing much of the discounting today. As we mentioned, the FUN Convention was quite busy, but trading levels continue to be anywhere from 10% to 20% lower than reported values. Adjustments to the downside are the norm for now, at least until more buyers enter the market and create additional competition.
The Heritage Auctions FUN Sale offered a lengthy list of rarities that are seldom seen in the marketplace. Included were numerous Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgan Dollars, many of which are the highest certified for the grade. The prices realized have created value advances for most of these issues. Besides the Morgans, there was a nice variety of coins for buyers to choose from, including the two presentation coins below; also listed are some other highlighted results from this Heritage FUN Auction.
1868 $10 Gold Pattern certified by PCGS PR66 Cameo

The 1868 Judd-661 $10 Gold Pattern is extremely rare with just four known examples. This PCGS PR66 Cameo is the highest certified of the existing coins and it realized $930,000 in this sale. It came by the way of the King Farouk Collection and went unsold at auction in 1954. One of the four known coins is housed in the Connecticut State Library, so there are only three collectible. None of the three had appeared at auction since 2007 when the PCGS PR65+ Deep Cameo was offered at the FUN Heritage Sale.

1855 Kellogg & Co. $50 Gold certified by PCGS PR64 Cameo

Like the Pattern above, the 1855 Kellogg & Co. $50 Gold is quite the rarity; all Kellogg $50 Gold coins were struck in Proof. They were originally intended to be presentation pieces for influential businesspeople at the time. There is no record of how many were minted although it is estimated that no more than twenty were produced. The PCGS PR64 Cameo in this sale is the finest known although NGC has a like graded coin in their Pop report. The final hammer for this PCGS coin hit at $1,260,000 in this Heritage FUN sale; its pedigree includes Humbert and Garrett.
