NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Selective Competition for Rarities in Heritage Sale
February 12, 2024
Heritage Auctions just completed their February Long Beach Expo Sale, and while some market prices have decreased as of late, and competition in the market has been reduced somewhat, there was still some competitive bidding for specific rarities. And, as with all Heritage auctions, there were some super rarities in this sale. Included was an extensive list of nice original Bust Dollars, many of which had not been seen on the market for quite some time. Lot viewing was held at the Long Beach Expo and the sale was conducted at the Heritage Dallas offices. Below are some of the highlights from this Heritage Auctions Long Beach Sale.
1798 Draped Bust Dollar Small Eagle 15 Stars certified by PCGS MS61
For collectors of Bust Dollars there are only a total of six coins available for the 1798 in all Mint State grades, three for each variety of 15 Stars and 13 Stars. This PCGS MS61 15 Stars received a lot of attention with a final bid of $216,000. The current value is listed at $125,450, however, the last reported auction result for any Mint State coin was at least ten years ago. In a May 2022 Heritage sale, a PCGS AU58+ sold for $114,000. That may have been in a stronger market than we have today but this MS61 still sold at a record price. Also, this coin was listed with no reserve, so it was destined to find a new home.

1876 $3 Gold certified by PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo and CAC
Over the past year and a half there has been a lot of attention directed toward the $3 Gold series with numerous Deep Mirror Proof coins trading at major auctions. The 1876 Proof $3 Gold had an original mintage of forty-five coins with the majority of those not classified as Deep Mirror Proof. There are only thirteen coins certified in PR65 Deep Cameo or higher; the most recent sale was in May of last year, a PR65 from the Harry W. Bass Collection sold for $144,000. This PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo with CAC approval was also once in the Harry W. Bass Foundation Collection. In this sale it brought $132,000, the current value is $175,000.
