NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Central States Should Attract Buyers

April 29, 2024

The Central States Numismatic Society Convention takes place this week (May 1-4) in Schaumburg, Illinois. With many coin values lower than a year ago, buyers at this event should be looking to take advantage of the current market. One of two things should happen at Central States: either dealers will begin to buy coins at higher prices or collectors will get some great buying opportunities at discounted levels.
Heritage Auctions will display another extraordinary sale with viewing opportunities throughout the CSNS show, with the actual sale culminating the following week at the Heritage offices in Dallas. This sale contains an attractive selection of Early $10 Gold in high grades, sure to captivate buyers, especially at today's levels. Also included in this sale is a complete set of Proof $10 Gold Indians in high grades. And for the St Gaudens collectors, there is a near complete set of Proof 66's & 67's. These selections could see some aggressive bidding with many coins not often seen on the market.
1944 Lincoln Cent Steel certified by PCGS MS64

The 1944 Steel Lincoln Cent is a true modern rarity with just eleven coins certified in all grades. This 1944 Steel Cent is one of the highest graded with only four certified in MS64 by PCGS. One of those MS64's was sold by Heritage back in 2021 for $180,000; the current value is listed at $156,250. The 1944 Steel Cent was a result of the Mint using some 1943 zinc-coated planchets that were left in the bins. With such a small production, this highest graded coin could bring a record price.

1796 $10 Gold Cap Bust certified by PCGS MS62+ and CAC

The original mintage for the 1796 $10 Gold Cap Bust was low at 4,146 coins, and there are just an estimated 175 coins in existence today. There are only twenty-nine coins certified in all Mint State grades, PCGS & NGC combined, with a total of four coins in the highest grade of MS63, two by each service. Six coins are certified in MS62 and this is the only MS62+ with the CAC approval; our current CAC value is listed at $380,000. A rarity of this magnitude with premium eye-appeal could see some highly active bidding.
