NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Tightened Market Exposed in Heritage Sale
June 17, 2024
The rare coin market continues to place second to the bullion market. With more buyers looking for Gold and Silver and other precious metals, there has been less competition for rare coins, leading to more fruitful bargain-hunting of available rarities at coin shows and major auctions. Comparing our listed values to the prices realized of the most recent auctions, there is quite a difference noted for many coins, and values in several series have been and will be adjusted accordingly.
The Heritage Auctions Signature Sale was viewed at the Long Beach Show and the auction attracted the usual clientele, although the competition may have been a bit less than normal. The results indicate that buyers are less aggressive but still in the market for specific rarities. Heritage had a wonderful selection of Morgan Dollars in some difficult grades. This was a dream sale for Morgan Dollar collectors looking for high-grade keys to the series. Listed below are some results of various rarities from this Heritage sale.
1893 O Morgan Dollar certified by NGC MS65
The 1893 O is one of the keys in the Morgan Dollar series, although not of the ranking of the 1893 S or the 1895 Proof. There were 300,000 coins originally minted, however, the majority of those have been certified below the Mint State category. Above the MS63 grade, this date becomes more difficult to acquire. There are over one hundred MS64 coins certified, yet there are only eighteen graded above that level with a single PCGS MS65+ the highest graded, which brought $228,000 in a 2021 Heritage sale. There are a total of nine coins certified in MS65 with two of those achieving CAC approval. This NGC MS65 realized $108,000 in this sale.

1886 $3 Gold certified by PCGS PR67 DCAM CAC
Over the last two years the $3 Gold series has been attracting more and more collector interest. This is especially true for the Proof coins. The 1886 had an original mintage of 142 coins with the majority of those certified as Cameo or Deep Cameo. This PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo with the CAC approval realized $102,000; there is only one other NGC coin listed in the grade, but this is the only one with the CAC recommendation. The current NumisMedia value is listed at $86,000, which will be updated.
