Signs of Market Strength in Heritage ANA Sale

The Heritage Auctions ANA sale, after an impressive showing at the World's Fair of Money, concluded at their home in Dallas with numerous equally impressive results. The week of auctions contained select rarities that ran throughout all the catalogues and covered quite a variety from nearly all series, Half Cents through $20 Gold. In Large Cents alone, there were over fifty coins that are seen only ever so often at auction. There were at least ten 1793 Large Cents that were quite collectible in grades up to MS62, all realizing over $50,000. There were another ten coins of various 1794 varieties, some bringing upwards of $100,000.

1821 Capped Bust Dime certified by NGC PR65 and CAC
The 1821 Capped Bust Dime is extremely rare in Proof with an original mintage of five coins and only four certified, a number that could be flawed by resubmissions. The price realized for this NGC PR65 with the CAC approval was $204,000; the CAC value listed was current at $81,000 and will be updated to be sure. In 2015, Heritage sold a PCGS PR66 with CAC for $94,000, and in 2019 they sold a PCGS PR65 for $78,000. The three photos of the coins mentioned herein all appear to be different, so we can assume they were not resubmissions of the same coins, leaving just two possible other coins in this very exclusive market.

1883 $20 Gold certified by PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo and CAC
The Proof 1883 Twenty Dollar Gold had an original mintage of ninety-two. However, there are only fourteen listed in the Deep Cameo category, and considering resubmissions, the total population could be somewhat less. Heritage sold a similar PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo coin without the CAC sticker at their 2021 FUN Auction for $336,000; this present coin with CAC approval realized $348,000, and in an entirely different market. Three of these coins reside in museum collections, and with a total survivor estimate of less than thirty coins, this is the second rarest Type III Double Eagle.
