NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Last Major Show of the Year

November 11, 2024

This week's Whitman Baltimore Winter Expo (November 13-16) is the last major industry event of 2024. The official auction is presented by Stack's Bowers Galleries, and lots will be displayed throughout the show. The sale commences the following week at the main offices of Stack's Bowers in California.
The November Showcase Auction includes a very nice selection of sets of U.S. Gold ($5, $10, & $20) from the Fairmont Collection, and the Rarities Night sale is also well represented with élite Gold rarities, especially Carson City Gold. You also don't often see five $4 Gold Stella's in one sale like you will find here. With overall prices lower than a year ago, this may be an excellent opportunity for collectors to find the coins they have sought for years.
1870 CC $20 Gold certified by PCGS AU55 and CMQ

This 1870 CC $20 Gold will likely be the top seller in this sale; certified by PCGS as AU55 and also is CMQ stickered, it is the highest certified in all grades. The current FMV is $1,722,500 in AU55, and there are less than twenty coins certified in all the AU grades and there likely less than fifty coins in existence. This date is unknown in Mint State, with an original mintage of just 3,789. Back in the early 1870's there was very little collector interest, and even less in higher denomination coinage; the coins were heavily used in commerce and none survived in uncirculated condition.

1872 CC $20 Gold certified by NGC MS61

The 1872 CC $20 may not be as rare as the above-mentioned 1870 CC, however, it is quite difficult to find in Mint State. There are over 650 coins certified in all circulated grades, but less than 20 are certified in Mint State by PCGS and NGC combined; the highest certified is MS62, one each from PCGS and NGC. The current FMV for this MS61 is $178,880. As with most Carson City Gold, especially the Twenties, there is strong collector demand. Despite the downturn in the coin market, there continues to be strong demand at current value levels for these issues.
