Dealers Looking Forward to the New Year

Coin business for the year is winding down as dealers are balancing their inventories and checkbooks for tax considerations, and, at the same time, preparing for 2025 and the FUN Convention which runs January 9-12. With the metals at the forefront of the market, dealers are maintaining an equilibrium with their holdings, readying for a metals market that could go one way or another, perhaps dramatically. Last year at this time (early December 2023) Gold broke its all-time high, rising above $2,100 an ounce. Today it is $2,650, a $550 gain from just one ago. Rare coin inventory is another story as prices appear to be stable; many sellers have been content with taking slightly less than the current market levels to move unwanted inventory.
With most of the coin industry recuperating and readying for next year, Great Collections continues to feature top rare coins in their weekly auctions that close every Sunday evening. Over the last couple of months, there have been thousands of rarities sold, not only from the U.S., but from other countries as well. They also feature many low population modern coins in these sales. Below are some selected highlights from the Great Collections Sunday auctions over the last three months.
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar Silver Plug certified by PCGS AU58 and CAC
The 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar with the Silver Plug is extremely rare with under one hundred coins certified in all circulated grades and only four coins in the Mint State grades with a single PCGS MS65+ the highest certified. The PCGS AU58 with CAC approval from the December 15th sale brought $247,500. Stack’s Bower Galleries sold a PCGS MS61 a year ago for $210,000. Recent studies indicate that less than one hundred coins were produced with the silver plug; the plug was inserted just prior to striking to bring lightweight planchets up to the standard weight. This was a one-time experiment.

1909 $20 Gold St Gaudens certified by PCGS PR65
There is a total of fifty Proof 1909 $20 St Gaudens certified in all grades with an NGC PR69 the highest certified (and currently being offered for sale). With an original mintage of 67 coins, and it being likely that resubmissions account for some of the current population, there are presumably less than fifty known to exist today. The 1909 PCGS PR65 in the December 15th GC sale realized $196,313. A PR66 in an NGC holder sold for $192,000 four months prior in a Heritage sale. This could be the bargain of the sale. The current FMV is just $93,130 and will need an upcoming adjustment.
