NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Results Are In From Heritage & Stack's ANA Auctions

September 8, 2025

Bullion may be the focal point of numismatic sales at this time (Gold is currently at $3,639 an ounce), but there are still many fabulous rare coins being sold in this current market. The highlights from the two huge ANA auctions revealed that the major auction houses can still deliver first-class sales. Prices realized may be discounted somewhat from the highs of the last couple of years, but there are still plenty of buyers for these rarities. And dealers are reporting that sales have been better, moving some of these rarities to their best customers soon after purchase.
Both ANA sales from Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries are now complete, and both were full of remarkable rarities; highlighting just a few was nearly impossible. Please visit their respective websites for a full list of prices realized. Adjustments to NumisMedia prices from these two sales is ongoing and will be included in the next few updates.
Heritage Auctions
1879 $4 Gold Stella Coiled Hair certified by PCGS PR65 and CAC

The 1880 $4 Gold Stella Coiled Hair in NGC PR67 and CAC, previewed in a recent Market Report, realized $2,280,000 in this Heritage Auctions ANA sale. The 1879 $4 Gold Stella Coiled Hair is nearly as rare as the 1880, with only twenty coins minted. The PCGS PR65 with CAC approval in this sale realized $1,440,000. This same coin brought $881,250 in a Heritage Sale back in 2015. The population reports indicate only five coins certified higher with a PCGS PR67 the highest. It is likely that there are just thirty-five examples known to exist of the 1879 and 1880 Coiled Hair Stella.
