$8.4 Million Realized for the 1822 $5 Gold Capped Bust

April 5, 2021

If the recent Stack's Bowers Galleries Auction is any indication, the coin market is the hottest it has been in five years. With all the activity on the trading circuits as well, prices throughout the value charts are advancing. The Stack's Bowers sale was held in conjunction with the PCGS Members Only Show in Las Vegas, and there were many highlights, but the 1822 $5 Gold Capped Bust was the big story, selling for $8.4 million.

1822 $5 Gold Capped Bust certified by PCGS AU50

With this being the only coin available of this date, the 1822 $5 Gold Capped Bust brought a record $8.4 million, making it the most valued U.S. minted gold coin ever sold at auction, according to Stack's Bowers Galleries. There are two other examples of this coin, but this is the only one certified. Most recently this coin was sold from the D. Brent Pogue Collection. Perhaps it should get the same fanfare of the 1804 Dollar, the 1913 Liberty Nickel, and the 1894 S Barber Dime because it is definitely the rarest of the four coins.

1796 Liberty Cap Half Cent with Pole certified by PCGS MS66 RB

This coin was discovered in a collection from England. There are only about twelve coins certified in Mint State Red and Brown, and there are none listed in Red. There are three coins certified in MS66, although there is one CAC approved and another with the + designation. The coin in this sale realized $288,000 and was also previously sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries as part of the Pogue Collection.

This was also previously sold by Stack's Bowers as part of the Pogue Collection, this time selling for $1,680,000 (it realized a little over $1.5 million previously). This coin is considered the finest known of this date with only about 150 examples out of an original mintage of 2,984. Acquiring important collections that contain 'Finest Known' coins is somewhat of a specialty of Stack's Bowers Galleries, and their sales typically draw very competitive bidding. Below are some other highlights from this Stack's Bowers Galleries sale.

Though the metals were down this past week, demand continues to keep dealers busy buying and selling. Physical supplies, especially for Silver products, are not that plentiful and sometimes buyers have to wait. Make sure you take physical possession of the products you purchase. Gold is currently $1,727.50 and Silver is $24.75.
