Rare Coin Market Soaring to New Levels
June 28, 2021
Heritage Auctions held their latest sale, June 17-20, at their headquarters in Dallas, and the results were consistent with the fast-paced rising market. There has been an increasing number of retail buyers and collectors over the last year with demand surpassing availability in most dealer inventories. With this increasing demand the FMV has risen in most series with Silver Dollars leading the way. There was a large selection of Morgan Dollars in this sale with an 1880 O in MS65+ CAC as one of the top sellers, bringing $36,000; the current NumisMedia CAC value is just $28,750. And there were many other highlights from this Heritage sale, most telling the same story: competition is intensifying and prices are rising.
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar Two Leaves certified by PCGS MS65
The NumisMedia Fair Market Value for the 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar Two Leaves MS65 is currently listed at $437,500, and this example brought $600,000 in the Heritage sale. There are only two coins certified in this grade, both by PCGS, and one higher in PCGS MS65+. This coin has a long pedigree but it recently sold from the Lawrence Stack Type Set and later from the Pogue Collection. This Two Leaves variety is also the rarer of the two types with just 22 coins certified in all Mint State grades, while the Three Leaves variety has a total of 72 coins listed in Mint State.

The last time a PR65 Cameo sold was by Heritage in their 2014 FUN Sale for $176,250; this coin brought $228,000 which is well over the current FMV of $206,250.
