Dealers Kept Busy with Long Beach Up Next
June 19, 2023
First was Baltimore, next is Long Beach, then FUN; some of the biggest shows of the year and they all occur within a month of each other. Dealers are hopeful that the metals will at least hold at current levels so the psychology of the moment can spur bullion sales in conjunction with rare coin activity this week in Long Beach. In a unique platform, Heritage Auctions, the official auctioneer of the Long Beach Expo, will be showing lots at the show, however, the sale is a combined event with the upcoming FUN Show. The actual sale will take place at the end of July at the Heritage offices in Dallas. We will have more information regarding the Heritage auction as it nears.
Registry set collectors can create some of the most active areas in today's modern coin market. These bidders are very competitive when it comes to the finest known coins and records can be broken. For example, the 1955 and 1958 Lincoln Cent in PCGS PR69 Deep Cameo, both selling for $50,400 at the Stack's Bowers Auction completed last week. An original 1955 Proof Set is worth $135, yet this 1955 Cent sold for about 400% of the entire set value. Listed below are some of the other highlights from the Official Whitman Baltimore Stack's Bowers sale.
1885 Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS67 Deep Mirror Prooflike
This 1885 Morgan Dollar may not be the highest valued coin in this sale, but Morgan Dollar collectors will surely appreciate the quality and the depth of mirror in this MS67 DMPL. This coin sold for $20,400 with a current NumisMedia FMV of $20,630. With DMPL Dollars, the deeper the mirror, the more the tiny little marks tend to show in the reflective surfaces. Many of these little marks tend to go unnoticed in non-DMPL coins.

1950 Franklin Half Dollar certified by PCGS PR66 Deep Cameo
The earliest Proof Franklin Half Dollars are extremely popular in Deep Cameo, and the highest grades are few and far between. The 1950 in PR66 Deep Cameo is the highest certified and this black and white beauty brought a strong premium to our most recent FMV of $54,380; the final price realized was $66,000. Some may wonder why this coin did not grade even higher, although a couple of minor milk spots may the reason.
