The last few months we have seen a noticeable downturn in market activity. With concerns over the economy and conflicts around the world, buyers have backed off on their purchases and are perhaps waiting for the new year to arrive. In the meantime, Stack's Bowers Galleries will provide a major auction over the next two weeks with lot viewing at the Whitman Baltimore Show this week. Dealers are hoping the market picks up for the last quarter of the year, but we may have to wait until 2024 for another major push forward in prices.
Last week Legend Rare Coin Auctions held their Regency Auction 61 with numerous top quality lots finding new homes. Many buyers were looking for bargains in today's market, however, to acquire some of these high-quality rarities it took some aggressive bidding. There was a lovely run of Bust Quarters in high grades that certainly attracted collectors. Below are some of the highlights from Legend's latest Regency Auction.
1837 Bust Quarter certified by PCGS MS67 Prooflike and CAC
This 1837 Bust Quarter, PCGS MS67 Prooflike with the CAC approval, is likely unique as a Prooflike as it is the only one certified in P/L. How this coin remained in such a high-quality state is amazing. Previously this coin was classified by NGC as PR68 Cameo. Back in 2015, in a much different market, it realized $152,750; in this sale it hammered at $282,000. This superb rarity was once owned by Pittman and later acquired by Pogue.

1885 $3 Gold certified by PCGS PR66 Deep Cameo and CAC
The 1885 $3 Gold had an original mintage of 109 coins in Proof. Today there are 64 coins certified by PCGS and NGC in Cameo, but only two coins in Deep Cameo. One of those is a PCGS PR62 Deep Cameo and the other is this PR66 Deep Cameo with the CAC sticker which realized $99,875 in this sale. This was the coin's first appearance at auction, so there was no price listed in our database and it will be updated accordingly.
