FUN Leads in the New Year
January 8, 2024
Dealers were generally satisfied with the results of the FUN Show as the volume of business transacted was far superior to their expectations. Prices may still be off from last year's highs, but the activity level was very strong at today's market levels; some value adjustments should be forthcoming over the next few weeks. Dealers are hoping the slowdown in business for the last half of 2023 was just a bump in the road.
Heritage Auctions was again the official auctioneer for the FUN Show as has been the case for well over two decades. Auction lot viewing was held at the show and the sale will take place this week at their Dallas headquarters. With demand on the rise as the year begins, there should be some active bidding as buyers will be looking to take advantage of the lower levels before the market really takes off.
This sale includes several special Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgan Dollars that could be added to some high-grade collections. There are many better date coins that are seldom seen in today's marketplace. Below are just a few of the potential highlights from this Heritage Auctions FUN sale.
1881 CC Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS67+ DMPL and CAC
While this 1881 CC Morgan Dollar in PCGS MS67+ Deep Mirror Prooflike with the CAC approval may not be perfect, it is the epitome of what a perfectionist would find acceptable for such a coin. It is flashy, with great contrast, minimal marks, and a great strike. This is the highest certified for the date and will be a benchmark to compare to other Dollars in an important collection. This coin comes from the David T. Miller #1 Registry Set of DMPL/PL Morgan Dollars.

1895 O Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS63 DMPL
This 1895 O Morgan Dollar PCGS MS63 with Deep Mirror Prooflike surfaces may not grade as high as the 1881 CC Dollar above, but it is just as rare if not more so. The 1895 O Dollar had an original mintage of 450,000, but in DMPL, it is nearly impossible to locate in high grades. This is the finest known according to the current population reports, with just eleven coins certified in all Mint State grades of DMPL. An interesting sidenote, prior to 2005, there were as many as three different coins sold at auction certified as MS65 DMPL; however, a photo comparison reveals that this current MS63 is a much better example than the MS65 coins that are no longer listed in the population reports. This coin is also from the David T. Miller Collection.
