Rare Gold Tops Stack's Bowers Baltimore Sale

Last week's Whitman Baltimore Expo featured the Stack's Bowers Galleries Auction, here are some highlights:
The always popular 1808 $2 ½ Gold Capped Bust in NGC MS62, a classic one year design with a very low availability, sold for $174,000. From Fine12 through MS65, there are less than 100 certified by PCGS and NGC. The last reported sale at auction in this grade realized $218,500 back in 2006.

This sale also included the rare 1879 $4 Gold Stella with Flowing Hair in PCGS PR65 Cameo with the CAC sticker, selling for $204,000, slightly above our current Market value of $195,000. The highest grade certified in Cameo is a single PCGS 67+ with another 14 coins in PR67. There are a total of 27 coins certified in PR65 Cameo and another 32 in PR66 Cameo.

A pair of New Orleans minted $20 Liberty Gold coins attracted some strong bidding. The 1854 O in NGC XF45 realized $240,000; the original mintage for this date was 3,250. There are 4 coins certified in the highest grade of AU58 and 4 in XF45. The next lot in this sale was an 1856 O $20 Gold in NGC AU53 which sold for $264,000. This date also reports no Mint State coins certified with AU58+ the highest. There are a total of 3 coins certified in AU53.

The 2019 S American Silver Eagle Enhanced Reverse Proof has caused quite a stir since its limited release last week. Only 30,000 coins were made available from the Mint for $65.95 each, one per address, and they immediately sold out. Aftermarket prices among dealers has been anywhere from $500 to $750 per coin.
