NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
1804 Dollar Realizes Over $3.3 Million
December 21, 2020
Part II of the Larry H. Miller Collection was auctioned last week by Stack's Bowers Galleries in Newport Beach at the Balboa Bay Resort. Much like the Part I auction, this sale had many classic rarities and collectors had the opportunity to bid on several coins that will most likely not be offered again for many years to come. There were three separate coins that sold for over a million dollars.
1804 $1 Draped Bust Class I certified by PCGS PR65
The 1804 Dollar is one of the most renowned rarities in the business; this PR65 realized $3,360,000. The Class I is generally known as the original, although they were actually minted in 1834 and there were likely just 8 coins minted. In the late 1850's, because of the popularity of this coin, the mint decided to produce more using the original obverse while pairing them with newer reverses; these are categorized as the Class II & III. Most recently, back in March 2017, Stack's Bowers sold the Dexter Dollar 1804 Class I in the same grade of PCGS PR65 for $3.2 million.

1894 S Barber Dime certified by NGC PR65 and CAC
The 1894 S Barber Dime is another classic rarity, always well publicized and well-known; this one brought $1,440,000. There are only three coins certified in this grade with just one approved by CAC, and there are three listed in PR66 by both services combined. The last PR65 to sell at auction was at the 2005 FUN Show when Heritage Auctions sold a PCGS PR65 for just over $1 million.

There are 8 coins grading higher with MS66+ the highest reported by PCGS. Our currently listed FMV price is $918,750, so it will be adjusted. There are more highlights below from Part II of the Larry H. Miller Collection and Stack's Bowers Galleries.
