NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Gold Rarities Top Auction Results

November 7, 2022

While the dealer networks continue to emphasize bullion trading due to strong demand from the public for Gold, Silver, Platinum, and other precious metals, the major auction houses have garnered the lion's share of rare coin trading. And it seems like when one auction is completed, another one begins. Heritage presented two major sales at the recent Long Beach Expo and then Stack's Bowers Galleries hosted lot viewing for their Official Auction at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore with the actual sale at their California headquarters concluded last week.

Proof Classic Gold is not always in favor, however, the more collectors realize that the number of available coins is limited, especially in the higher grades, the more attractive they become. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries both featured several Proof rarities which realized substantial premiums to the current Market levels.

Featured below are two of the Proof Gold rarities Heritage Auctions sold at the Long Beach Sale. Check the Heritage website for a complete list of prices realized.

1866 $20 Gold certified by NGC PR65 Cameo and CAC

The 1866 $20 Gold had an original mintage of just 30 Proof coins. There have been 15 total certified, with this coin the highest graded in PR65 Cameo. There are only 4 coins certified in Deep Cameo PR65 or better with the PCGS PR67 the highest reported at this time. Some of the fifteen coins certified could be the result of resubmissions so the true count is likely less. This NGC PR65 Cameo with the CAC approval brought $660,000 which is fairly close to the NumisMedia CAC value of $675,000. This coin was previously included in the Trompeter Collection.

1887 $20 Gold certified by NGC PR67+* Cameo

The original mintage for the 1887 $20 Gold in Proof was 121, higher than the 1866, however, this coin is the highest certified in Cameo (the highest in Deep Cameo is PR66). This coin realized $600,000 against the NumisMedia value of $525,000 which will be updated. It is important to note that this is a Proof only date, so with just 121 coins minted, they are more desirable to many collectors. Highest graded Proof Gold has become some of the most aggressively sought after coins over the last couple of years. Most of these coins are going into collections that will not resurface for many years to come.

Stack's Bowers Galleries also attracted buyers with some impressive Proof Classic Gold. Two of these coins are featured below and the list represents some of the other highlights. Please check the Stack's Bowers website for a complete listing of prices realized.

1885 $20 Gold certified by PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo and CAC

This PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo, with a CAC approval, is the finest certified 1885 $20 Gold; it sold for $990,000. Just 77 coins were originally minted but there are only around 20 currently substantiated. The new owner of this rarity has one of the most attractive Proof Twenties available and the result of this sale will allow us to place a value where there previously was none. This coin was sold twice in the past at ANA Shows, in 2005 and 2011.

1861 $10 Gold certified by PCGS PR64+ Cameo and CAC

With only 69 coins originally minted, the 1861 $10 Gold in Proof is extremely rare. There are only 10 coins certified in all grades with none listed in Deep Cameo. This PCGS PR64+ Cameo with the CAC sticker is the highest certified in PCGS with only one PR65 Cameo by NGC. This coin brought $336,000 and was once housed in the Trompeter Collection. The NumisMedia CAC value was at $173,000 from a very old listing and will be updated as a result of this sale.
