NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Bargain Hunter's Delight in Recent Auction
July 24, 2023
The depth of today's coin market is not what it was a year ago. A final tally from the latest Heritage Auctions sale, a combined event for the Long Beach and FUN Shows, had some mixed results. An ultra-rare 1873 $10 Gold Closed 3 in PCGS MS61 realized just $102,000. This is the highest certified by either service, and our FMV for the MS60 currently sits at $118,130.
This auction was filled with true rarities that seemed to be selling at wholesale price levels. Possibly the upcoming ANA in early August had an effect, with thousands of dealers and collectors gearing themselves up for the major annual event. Watch soon for some of these rarities to be offered in sales and command higher premiums. Below are some of the highlights from this Heritage Auctions Long Beach/Summer FUN Sale.
1927 D Peace Dollar certified by PCGS MS66+ and CAC
The 1927 D Peace Dollar in PCGS MS66+ is the highest certified in either service. There are a total of 22 coins certified in MS66, just 7 with the + designation, and there are 8 coins that are CAC approved in this grade. This MS66+ CAC realized $93,000; the NumisMedia Plus+ value is listed at $62,500 and our CAC price is at $72,500.

1874 $3 Gold certified by PCGS PR66 Cameo and CAC
Over the last three years there has been a considerable increase in demand for the $3 Gold series, especially for Proof issues. A few major collections with high grade specimens have entered the market in the last year and had great results. This 1874 $3 Gold PCGS PR66 Cameo with CAC approval brought $144,000. The last time this coin sold in auction, at ANA 2019, it brought $108,000. This is the finest known coin with only five others in PR65 Cameo. There are two PCGS coins in Deep Cameo PR66, one is actually available for sale from a well-known dealer for $185,000.
