NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Current Market Offers Opportunities for Buyers
September 11, 2023
With the metals down and many rarities being offered and sold at discounted levels over the last few months, the Long Beach Expo was a great opportunity for collectors to acquire rare and bullion coins from attending dealers from all over the country. Though Gold is virtually the same as it was three years ago, potential buyers appear to be waiting for a signal of sorts to indicate an explosive trend. No crystal balls here but many analysts are expecting an upward push over the next few months.
The Long Beach show featured lot viewing for the next Heritage Auctions Signature Sale which begins this Thursday at their home offices in Dallas. As is custom with Heritage sales, there are very nice rarities throughout the sale, with some in most series, especially those prior to 1900. Some of the top highlights are listed below; make sure to check out the Heritage catalogues for the items on your want lists.
1879 $4 Gold Flowing Hair certified by PCGS PR65 and CAC
The $4 Stella is always a popular coin at auction, but the starting price point for anything in PR60 and higher is well over $100,000, and this limits the potential number of buyers. With an original mintage of under 500 coins for all dates and varieties, the top quality Stellas will always see aggressive bidding when available. The current CAC value for the 1879 Flowing Hair Stella is $285,000.
The population reports indicate that Stellas are some of the most resubmitted coins to the two top grading services, with well over 500 coins listed for just the 1879 Flowing Hair and the Cameo Flowing Hair alone. There are over 120 listed in various grades for the balance of the issues. There are a total of 8 coins certified in PR65 that also have CAC approval, and there are 44 listed as certified higher in the population reports, PCGS PR67+ being the highest.

1870 $20 Gold certified by NGC PR65 UCAM and CAC
This same coin sold at auction in a 2011 Heritage sale bringing $345,000, and in another Heritage sale, in 2018, it sold for $336,000. Both the 2011 and 2018 markets were steady to strong at the time, while the current market is a little subdued with some rarities being discounted by around 10%. The current CAC value for the 1870 $20 Gold PR65 DCAM(UCAM) is $520,000. There are only 6 coins certified in Proof Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo with the highest being NGC PR67 (which sold for $503,100 in 2013). This NGC PR65 UCAM with the CAC sticker has a lot going for it, especially when comparing the recent auction sale (April 2022) of a PCGS PR64 DCAM for $360,000. This PR65 looks at least two grades better with superb surfaces and no distractions, and some buyers may view it as a potential upgrade.
